Dacia Logan Named One Of The Best Cars Not Sold In America

In its latest edition, Business Week named the Indian variant of the Dacia Logan, made by Mahindra, One Of The Best Cars Not Sold In America. The article gives credit to Dacia for being the original source of the model.

India’s Mahindra & Mahindra would probably love to export cars to this country some day, but that day is probably several years away. At any rate, Mahindra started building the Logan in India this year.

They go on saying how the Dacia Logan isn’t ready for the American market because of the right-hand driving and the slow 75HP base engine. However, the Dacia Logan does have left hand drive, just not in the Indian model. It would certainly be interesting to see the Dacia Logan exported in the US, but somehow I don’t see Americans being as interested in a cheap family car like the Europeans are.

The Logan is originally a model from Dacia, the Romanian automaker. Dacia has never sold cars here, despite some long-running attempts dating back to the mid-1980s. In turn, Dacia belongs to Renault, which bailed out of the U.S. market in 1986. India’s Mahindra & Mahindra would probably love to export cars to this country some day, but that day is probably several years away. At any rate, Mahindra started building the Logan in India this year. The car itself is not that interesting by the standards of U.S. consumers – for starters, it’s got right-hand drive and the base engine is only 75 hp -- but its heritage shows how the world is shrinking.
